SIXTEEN

My dreams were a hodgepodge of monsters and DDA members, most of whom were trying to kill me. I jerked awake shortly after sunrise, trying to muffle my shuddering breaths so as not to wake Galen. When his hand landed on my back, I knew I’d failed.

“What’s wrong?” he asked in a sleepy voice. “Are you sick? Do you need me to take you to the hospital?”

“I’m fine.” It was an automatic answer.

He grunted as he slid his arm around my back. He was warm, like my own personal heating pad at times, and I leaned my head against his chest because I wanted to hear the reassuring beat. “Tell me what’s wrong,” he insisted.

“I just … had a dream.”

“About the monster?”

“Yeah, but the DDA was there.”

“Ugh. I shouldn’t have told you.”

“I don’t want you lying to me.”

“I don’t want to lie to you, but you need to rest. If you’re afraid … .” He trailed off, exasperation obvious as he regrouped. “I don’t want you being afraid all the time, Hadley. I won’t let them hurt you.”

We both knew that he wouldn’t be able to stop them if they set their minds on going after me. “I don’t want to talk about it.” I buried my face in the hollow between his neck and shoulder as he pulled me on top of him and reclined against the pillows. “Tell me something good.”

“I love you.”

That was the best thing to hear. “I love you too. Tell me something else.”

“You’re beautiful, the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen in real life.”

“I think I should be more beautiful than the women you’ve seen in movies too.”

He laughed, his chest rumbling. “I’ve always had a thing for Reese Witherspoon.”

“Oh, I’m so hurt.”

“I’ll never love her like I do you.” His fingers lightly trailed up my spine. I recognized the second he was going to make things serious. “Hadley … .”

“Don’t.” I was too worked up. “I don’t want to think about it just yet.”

“I know, but I can’t take you being afraid. You’re going to be okay. I’ve been meticulous in filing my reports. My mother is on the DDA, so she’ll have a voice if they were to want to bring you in for questioning.”

“Your mother wants you to be with a shifter.”

“My mother, for all her faults, wants me to be happy,” he clarified. “You are what I need to be happy. She likes you.”

“Yeah.” I kept my eyes closed. “Can we just do this for thirty minutes? I want some quiet time with you.”

He clutched me tighter. “Close your eyes. Maybe you’ll fall back asleep.”

It was a nice thought, but it wasn’t going to happen. “You can make me breakfast when we’re done.”

“Oh, really? Maybe I want you to make me breakfast.”

“Then you’re getting cold cereal.”

“Yeah, I’ll make breakfast.”

“I thought you would see things my way.”

AN HOUR LATER WE WERE BOTH SHOWERED and in the kitchen. Galen had pulled on one of May’s old aprons and was busily toiling in front of the stove as he flipped pancakes.
